Fighting Brexit
Over recent months the Labour government has finally started publicly pointing out the failures of Brexit. But we still need to keep up the pressure from committed pro-Europe organizations, to keep Labour moving in the right direction. We need to support and join groups that campaign for or support European links. So I’ve added web links to all the organizations below.
These groups are dedicated to opposing Brexit and to restoring closer ties with Europe: Some of these are broadly-based with regard to membership and focus:
- The European Movement, which has branches all over the UK, is dedicated to fighting Brexit.
- Grassroots for Europe, a national campaigning organization, has similar aims.
- Stay European, a pro-EU campaign with, again, similar aims.
There are also more specialized groups working to the same end:
- The Young European Movement, campaigning for students and young people.
- Thank EU for the Music, working to reopen European contact for UK musicians
- National Rejoin March, which organizes regular marches in London and elsewhere, campaigning for rejoin.
- The Festival of Europe, a programme of summer arts events around the UK celebrating our European identity.
I can find two anti-Brexit/pro EU online information exchanges.
The UK has a wide range of political parties of varying sizes and ideologies. One political party, The Rejoin party, is entirely dedicated to fighting for a return to EU membership. It has Derby-based members, and would, I’m sure, welcome more.
Apart from Labour and the Liberal Democrats there are several parties participating in national governments within the UK in various ways, and five of these are explicitly anti-Brexit. They include:
- Plaid Cymru in Wales
- The SNP in Scotland
- The SDLP, Alliance and Sinn Fein parties in Northern Ireland
- The Green Party in the UK
They all accept members or associate members from throughout the UK.
Three other organizations are worth a mention.
- The Federal Trust: This is a pro-rejoin thinktank. Its on a relatively small scale, but produces some interesting videos and papers.
- Best for Britain: A campaigning organization advocating reform of our political system and, crucially, a closer relationship with the EU.
- UK in a Changing Europe: This is a heavyweight thinktank dedicated to researching and analyzing the effects of Brexit. It is not explicitly anti-Brexit, but is a very useful source of evidence favouring a closer relationship with the EU.
